The History of Bodhisattva
The concept of the Bodhisattva emerged in early Mahayana Buddhism as an enlightened being who delays final liberation in order to aid all sentient life.
While rooted in Indian tradition, the Bodhisattva ideal spread widely across East Asia, inspiring rich artistic traditions in China.
From the Tang dynasty onward, Bodhisattvas were depicted in bronze, stone, and wood, embodying compassion, wisdom, and protection. By the 20th century, such figures remained central in both temple settings and private devotion.
