Who was Jacob Bellevois?
Jacob Bellevois (circa 1621 – 1676) was a Dutch marine painter best known for his atmospheric seascapes during the Dutch Golden Age of painting.
He was born in Rotterdam and spent much of his life working there, in Gouda and in Hamburg.
Rotterdam Roots and Activity
Bellevois was born in Rotterdam and was active there for much of his career. Rotterdam, being an important port city, was an ideal place for a marine painter.
He also worked in Gouda (where he married in 1643) and Hamburg for a time during the 1660s, but returned to Rotterdam before his death.

Specialization in Seascapes
Jacob Adriaensz Bellevois was a Dutch Golden Age painter renowned for his specialization in seascapes, particularly those depicting the stormy, dynamic waters of the North Sea.
He portrayed ships in meticulous detail, demonstrating a clear familiarity with maritime life and 17th-century vessels. Bellevois typically used a muted color palette of greys, blues, and browns, which added to the somber and realistic mood of his scenes.
Influence of Simon de Vlieger
His style shows a clear influence from Simon de Vlieger, one of the most important innovators of marine art. Bellevois likely knew his work well — he owned at least 12 paintings by De Vlieger.
The influence is visible in his attention to light, sky, and water, and in the structured but poetic composition of his scenes.
Jacob Bellevois is one of the few marine painters who occasionally painted in portrait format.
