17 Century

Late Ming Dynasty

Wooden Taoist Figures

A finely carved pair of wooden Taoist figures, retaining traces of their original polychromy in muted tones of vermilion, lapis, and ochre. Each figure wears a layered robe and a distinctive curled official’s cap — a hallmark of high-ranking attendants within the Taoist pantheon.

The male figure possibly represents Wanchang Wang, the Heavenly Attendant associated with literature and scholarly success, holding a hu (ceremonial scepter) reverently before his chest.

The female figure presents an offering bowl, symbolising devotion and ritual. Both faces have serene expressions and subtle asymmetry––carved by an accomplished artisan of the Late Ming period.

The History of Beijing Glass

Beijing (or Peking) glass emerged in the 18th century under the Qing emperors, who established glass workshops within the Forbidden City.

Originally influenced by European techniques, Chinese artisans adapted glassmaking to suit local aesthetics, often mimicking hardstones like jade or agate and developing their own decorative language.

By the 19th century, Beijing glass had become a distinct artistic medium, used to produce both imperial and scholar’s objects. Bowls such as this one were prized for their craftsmanship, texture, and refined appearance.
